Indians Win Series Opener

BROOKLYN, Tuesday Oct. 5, 1920 -- Steve O'Neill's two doubles helped Stan Coveleski pitch the Cleveland Indians to a 3-1 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers in today's blustery opener of the best-of-nine World Series.

The game was scoreless into the second inning, when the Indians' George Burns hit a blooper over first base. The wind blew it away from first baseman Ed Konetchy and into short right. Konetchy tried to get Burns at second but threw the ball all the way to the left field stands, allowing Burns to score. After Larry Gardner grounded out, Joe Wood walked and took third when Joe Sewell singled to right center. Then O'Neill doubled to left, scoring Wood.

In the fourth, Wood barely missed a homer, doubling high off the wall in left center. O'Neill doubled again, this time off the rightfield wall, for a 3-0 lead.

NOTES: OF Joe Wood and famed pitcher Smoky Joe Wood were one and the same. Difference was a lame arm.
